Country star Kellie Pickler made a special trip to Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee to help raise awareness of child hunger during the summer months. Kellie has partnered with the ConAgra Foods Foundation and Feeding America to promote a Hunger-Free Summer.
In Tennessee, nearly 400,000 children don't know where their next meal will come from and their struggle increases during the summer months when access to free and reduced-price school meals are no longer available. These children rely on our Children's Feeding Programs to fill the gap in missed meals.
"I was really surprised at how many kids go hungry during the summertime, just because they rely on the school meals for food," Pickler said.
Jaynee Day, President and CEO of Second Harvest, took Kellie on a tour of the Food Bank to show the magnitude of work involved in feeding hungry people in our 46-county service area. After her tour, Kellie spent time with local volunteers assembling food bags for our BackPack Program.
With summer officially here, we hope everyone will remember that hunger doesn't take a vacation. Children in need struggle with hunger everyday and they need our help to enjoy a hunger-free summer.
