Hunger is a reality for many Middle Tennesseans. Many of these individuals and families are food insecure, which means they do not know where their next meal will come from. Second Harvest has nine different programs that serve 46 counties in Middle and West Tennessee to help those who are hungry and try to solve hunger issues in our community.
Pilot Programs
On top of our nine programs that Second Harvest offers, there are two new programs that have been piloted this year—Together We Grow and H.O.M.E. (Healthy Options Made Easy).
Together We Grow
Children at three of our Kids Cafe sites have the opportunity to get their hands in the dirt this summer and learn how to grow their own food. With the knowledge of how to live sustainable lives, we here at Second Harvest are hoping the children will have a greater appreciation for healthy eating as a result of this experience. H.O.M.E. (Healthy Options Made Easy)
Dietitians and women working in the nutrition field from around Nashville have come together at Second Harvest to host a series of six cooking classes in partnership with the Homeless Commission. The series is entitled H.O.M.E. which stands for Healthy Options Made Easy. These classes were designed to teach basic cooking skills to individuals who may have experienced homelessness in the past but now have access to housing and a kitchen. We teach simple and nutritious recipes that can be replicated with ease. Click here to learn more...
our mission
To feed hungry people and work to solve hunger issues in our community.
get involved
For 1 in 8 Americans, hunger is a reality. We all know and are in contact with people affected by hunger, even though we might not be aware of it.
face of hunger
"Times are tough. I've been unemployed for over a year. Even though I wish I didn't need help, I do. I have a grandson to feed, and it's wonderful to have support from Second Harvest."
