How Important is Healthy Food for Mothers and Babies?

The secret to a thriving life is healthy food for mothers and babies.

World Health Day 2025 is bringing attention to maternal and newborn health. Second Harvest knows how vital food is during pregnancy and when a child is very young.

Proper nutrition supports a healthy pregnancy. It reduces complications during childbirth and gives newborns the best start possible.

For mothers, food is more than fuel. Food provides the nutrients that support their bodies and a developing baby. If you are an expecting mother, reach for foods high in iron, folic acid, calcium, and protein.

For newborns, nutrition sets the foundation for a healthy life. It supports brain development, strengthens the immune system, and helps babies grow and thrive.

Yet across Middle and West Tennessee, many families face food insecurity. Moms expecting and caring for newborns feel the effects of hunger more.

Cheyenne is pregnant with her second child. She is no longer able to work, because of the pregnancy. Daycare costs, car payments, and healthcare bills are piling up.

That’s why she attended a Mobile Pantry. While there, Cheyenne was able to get her family two weeks of groceries. She stocked her shelves with everything from staples to fresh dairy and produce.

All the food a growing family needs.

Second Harvest has community food distributions to targeted partnerships for families with young children, we’re helping provide not just food—but a healthy start. When families have healthy food for mothers and babies, they can build a better tomorrow.
