Anne Holt and News 2 WKRN have championed our mission to fight hunger for more than 35 years!
News 2 WKRN first took up the fight against hunger more than 35 years ago. Anne Holt, news anchor at the time, remembers learning about our efforts and joining the cause as spokesperson for the station’s Food 2 Families program.
Food 2 Families worked to raise awareness about local hunger and encourage the community to get involved by donating food.
Today, the program has expanded to local schools, teaching children about the scope of hunger while making a difference. Each fall, dozens of schools participate in a friendly competition to collect the most donated food as a part of the News 2 Food 2 Families School Food Drive
“It gave us a priceless interaction with our communities…the ability to educate our children, and educate a whole new generation about hunger,” Anne says of Food 2 Families.
Fighting hunger from the start
Championing hunger relief was natural for Anne. She grew up as one of 13 children on a farm. Because her family grew what they ate, they understood the true value of fresh, healthy food.
Although she’s never experienced hunger personally, Anne says her gratitude for her good fortune motivates her to ensure others have access to the food they need.
She was honored to learn Second Harvest dedicated one of our sorting rooms to her work — the very room where food collected through Food 2 Families was sorted.
Anne remembers that in the early days, Second Harvest wasn’t much more than a closet handing out emergency food. She’s thrilled to see how our programs and services have expanded over the years, and she credits the growth to our community’s caring heart.
“Hunger is not something that one person or one organization can solve on their own — we have to work together,” she says. “We are very fortunate to live in a giving community.”
