For Hungry Children, Summer Break Isn’t a Vacation

Hunger Free Summer

We think of summer as every kid’s favorite time of year.

School’s out, and they can enjoy two months of carefree fun. Right?

Not quite.

For the 1 in 7 children facing hunger in Middle and West Tennessee, summer can be the hungriest time of year.

Summer Break Is Broken

Thousands of children receive free breakfasts and lunches during the school year. When cafeterias close for summer break, these children lose access to the food they depend on to eat.

During the summer months, struggling families have to provide 10 additional meals per week per child. In a typical 10 week summer break, that’s 100 meals per child.
