Kroger Takes Action Against Hunger During Hunger Action Month

Longtime Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee supporter Kroger, is taking action this September during Hunger Action Month – a month dedicated to raising awareness of the issue of hunger and taking action to ensure our neighbors facing hunger get the food they need.

With an estimated 1 in 5 individuals, including 1 in 4 children, facing hunger amid the COVID-19 pandemic, partners like Kroger are helping put food on the table for families, seniors, and children who are struggling.

Recently, the grocery retailer gifted $175,000 to fund Second Harvest’s hunger relief efforts during this critical time – including generously funding 15 additional child Summer Food Program sites needed due to the tornado damage in March and financial hardships caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

ZERO HUNGER | ZERO WASTE

Through its Zero Hunger | Zero Waste plan, Kroger is commitment to ending hunger in our communities and eliminating waste in the company by 2025.   Kroger supports Second Harvest in a variety of ways including weekly donations of fresh, healthy food to be distributed throughout our 46-county service area.

“We have partnered with Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee for over 35 years and fully support their mission of ending food insecurity in our communities,” said Melissa Eads, Corporate Affairs Manager for the Kroger Nashville division. “Through our Zero Hunger | Zero Waste plan we are committed to ending hunger and eliminating waste.”

Three times a week, our trucks pick up fresh produce and other perishable items from Kroger stores that would have otherwise gone to waste. This food is then sorted at our warehouse and distributed to our Partner Agencies for those in need.

In addition, Kroger employees often volunteer their time and energy towards our mission, and they enable members of the community to drop off non-perishable food donations year-round at Kroger locations by placing them in the Second Harvest Food Bank barrel at the front of the store.

Thanks Kroger, for your commitment to fighting hunger during Hunger Action Month and for the last four decades!
