The Women Fighting Hunger at Second Harvest

Meet the women fighting hunger at Second Harvest.

For International Women’s Day, we’re celebrating our Individual Giving Team. Suzanne, Destiney, Renee, and Marian are our fundraising experts. These women are also passionate advocates for hunger relief.

Let’s hear what inspires their amazing work.

For Suzanne, Women’s History Month is a time to recognize those who have made lasting impacts on society.

She admires figures like Eleanor Roosevelt, Rosa Parks, and Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Their commitment to human rights, civil rights, and gender equality keeps her motivated. “Women have played an important role throughout history, and it’s vital to honor their contributions,” Suzanne says.

Destiney echoes this sentiment. She highlights the progress women have made in securing rights that were once out of reach. She explains, “We must continue working until women are seen as equals in every space.”

This team of women has built a strong foundation of trust.

“We have a bond that has been built over time,” says Marian Edison. “There is great respect, trust, and admiration for one another. We celebrate how our differences make us stronger.”

For many on the team, their passion stems from personal experiences.

Destiney credits her grandmother as her inspiration. She always found ways to share what she had with others in need, even when times were hard. Destiney says, “She showed love through food, and I have the opportunity to continue her legacy every day at Second Harvest.”

Renee’s mother’s dedication to food security shaped her career. She grew up in a farming family. So, her mother taught others how to preserve food and plan nutritious meals.

She always cared for the community. “She instilled in me the belief that food is an expression of love and community,” Renee shares.

Women often feel the brunt of food insecurity. Marian works to change that. “Women wear many hats—working, caregiving, managing finances, and contributing to their communities. Yet, despite their best efforts, many still struggle to put food on the table. I want to help change that.”

On International Women’s Day, let’s recognize the women who are fighting hunger. They are creating a stronger and more equitable future.

Their hard work and passion ensures that no one in Middle or West Tennessee goes hungry.

Join us in celebrating these women and all those working to build a hunger-free community. Your support helps continue their mission. Donate today to make a difference.
