We’re Building Inclusive Food Programs for Diverse Communities

What do inclusive food programs for diverse communities look like? At Second Harvest, the answer starts with listening.

Diversity Month is a great time to remember the strength of every voice in our community. A time to hear every voice. That’s why we host Neighbor to Neighbor Councils.

There’s no one-size-fits-all solution to hunger. For some families, transportation is a massive barrier. For others, access to fresh and healthy food makes all the difference. Sometimes, providing a neighbor with just a box of food is not enough.

Neighbor to Neighbor Councils are where we engage with the people we serve. There, we learn more about their challenges and experiences with food insecurity. We hear their stories.

Our neighbors have shared their need for more mobile food distributions. They have also shared how vital increased access to fresh produce is in their lives. Their insight has inspired inclusive food programs for diverse communities.

Second Harvest is responding. We have expanded our Mobile Market program to reach more neighborhoods. We’re also encouraging our Partner Agencies to adopt choice models. That way neighbors can select the foods that best meet their cultural and dietary needs. We also prioritize fresh fruits and vegetables at every distribution.

This Diversity Month, we’re proud to take action based on what we hear. Honoring diversity means making space for every story, every voice, and every neighbor.
