How Do Food-Insecure Children Get Food Over the Weekend?

As students return to school, ensuring access to nutritious food is more important than ever. For the 1 in 6 children facing hunger, the free and reduced-price meals they receive at school may be the only reliable source of nutrition they have. What happens when the school doors close for the weekend or during breaks? This is where Second Harvest’s BackPack Program steps in.

The BackPack Program is designed to bridge the gap for children who may not have access to nourishing food over the weekend. Each backpack includes enough food to help sustain a child over the weekend or during a school break. This program ensures students can return to school on Monday ready to learn and thrive.

Good nutrition is essential for children’s physical health, mental well-being, and academic success. A healthy diet provides the energy and nutrients children need to grow, concentrate, excel in their studies, and thrive. Without proper nutrition, children can struggle with cognitive development, experience lower academic performance, and face long-term health issues.

By providing nutritious food through the BackPack Program, Second Harvest helps ensure that children have the healthy diet they need to succeed in school and beyond. When children are well-nourished, they are better equipped to focus, participate in class, and engage with their peers—laying the foundation for a brighter future.

One of the key partners in executing the BackPack Program is The Well, a Partner Agency serving Williamson County. The Well is deeply committed to fighting food insecurity, serving 1,300 families a month through their food pantries. Their operation follows a client choice model, which allows families to “shop” for the items they need, removing barriers between those they serve and the support they provide.

At The Well, their BackPack Program is affectionately known as the “JetPack Project.” This program is their pride and joy, specifically designed to meet the needs of children in Williamson County. The JetPack Project understands that food insecurity is often generational, and by nourishing children today, they are helping to break the cycle for the future.

But The Well’s impact goes beyond just food. They offer a holistic approach to support, providing counseling for issues like drug abuse and domestic violence, helping families navigate government assistance, and addressing the benefits cliff. This comprehensive support is made possible because food is the starting point. As they say at The Well, “We don’t give out food. We give out hope.”

As the school year begins, the need for programs like Second Harvest’s BackPack Program becomes even more critical. By supporting this program, you can help ensure that children in our community have the nutrition they need to succeed. Whether through donations, volunteering, or spreading the word, every bit of support helps make a difference in the lives of the 1 in 6 kids facing hunger in our service area. Let’s work together to make sure every child can thrive, both in the classroom and at home.
